Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day,

According to Wikipedia Juneteenth is a holiday in the United States that commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in the U.S. state of Texas in 1865. Celebrated on June 19, the term is a portmanteau of June and nineteenth,  and is recognized as a state holiday or special day of observance in 42 of the United States

Since Galveston was the first place in Texas slaves heard of the Emancipation Proclamation, the city will be kicking off one of the many celebrations in our area. The 34th Annual Al Edwards Emancipation Proclamation reading and prayer breakfast will be held at the Ashton Villa on Broadway at 8:30am. The event is free to the public.

Houston is also going to be celebrating Juneteenth today. Emancipation Park on Dowling at Elgin will be open from 11am until 8pm. The 141st annual Juneteenth Festival will start at 4pm.

There will be music, food and even story time about how slaves learned about their freedom here in Texas.
